TY Programme and Site Visit to Northern Trust Offices in Limerick a Great Success!

After 25 students from Castletroy College successfully completed the Irish Funds TY Financial Literacy Programme in February, Róisín Cahill and Mark Flynn took the students this March to the Northern Trust Limerick Offices. The students had an introduction with Catherine Duffy, General Manager, followed by a walk around the offices.

Mark and Róisín were our industry leads throughout the programme, which commenced on 2 February 2023. After a brief introduction to the Investment Funds industry, we looked at the value of saving and investments. It was obvious that the students were interested in the world of financial services.  Mark described his career to date in financial Services, which started in Limerick Institute of Technology, where he specialised in marketing. The students were interested to hear Roisin’s background in law, demonstrating the diversity of roles and backgrounds in the Industry and Northern Trust.

The students completed the programme over three Modules. Róisín kicked off Module 2 discussing topics and developments affecting worldwide financial services. In Module 3 we covered legislation, rules, and the parties to the fund structure.  We allowed time for group chats to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the various parties including the Administrator, the Depositary, and the Investment Manager. The class really grasped the concept of investments and the role of the investment manager.

During the final module, we completed a Critical Thinking task.  Using the Critical Thinking methodology in the Programme, Roisin and Mark asked the group to come up with some marketing ideas to help promote Northern Trust to the next generation; the result was varied but effective.

“It is an enjoyable programme, the presenters are telling us useful, real-life information that we can apply to our own lives. The presenters are very professional and very enthusiastic, and this has come across well to us and made the presentation more interesting.” TY Student.
