TY Financial Literacy Programme at Loreto Balbriggan

The TY Financial Literacy Programme kicked off on 16 January in Loreto Balbriggan and ran a series of modules until mid-March.

This allowed us to adapt the Programme as we progressed, taking the learnings from other schools in Limerick, Kilkenny, Clonmel, Tuam and Cork. Aine Murray, the TY Economics teacher was hugely invested in the Programme and joined us for all the classes and gave valuable feedback on the Programme.

Sinead Flynn, Trainee Solicitor at Dechert and Fiona de Burca, Asset & Wealth Management Assurance Partner, PWC acted as industry leads. It was great for the students to hear about our industry from two of our member firms from two different perspectives  - audit and legal.

In Module one, when we introduced Irish Funds, the Industry and the “Goat Story”, the students were interested, but asked for more “interaction”. Interaction, for students in TY, is group work and use of interactive “apps”. We used this feedback to create handouts for future classes. Also students pereferred the shorter one hour sessions over a two hours session which will be incorporated in the main feedback.

During the closing session, we introduced stock markets, NASDAQ, LSE and Euronext, Dublin. The students selected shares for their ‘mini portfolios’. Aine Murray will work with the students to monitor their portfolios over the rest of the year.

We have been invited back for the next school year in 2023/24.
