“We can’t stand still – it’s all about agility.”
Our CEO, Pat Lardner, recently sat down with Tom Mc Enaney on Newstalk Breakfast Business to discuss how Ireland can maintain its competitive edge in the global funds and asset management industry.
The conversation touched on a range of key topics:
Funds Sector 2030 – A strong welcome for the Department of Finance Ireland’s report, which includes 42 recommendations to strengthen the industry. Pat noted the need for agile implementation of the report recommendations and that the industry is only relevant to the extent that we provide the solutions investors need.
Timing is critical - with the EU legislation Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive II (AIFMD II) set to be transposed into Irish law, now is the time to act.
Building on our strengths – Effective implementation of the 2030 recommendations will help sustain employment growth and enhance the industry’s contribution to the Irish economy.
Access to all asset classes – Investors are increasingly looking to private assets, including in areas like infrastructure, and renewables, which demand innovative solutions beyond traditional listed assets.
ETF leadership – Ireland manages €1.56 trillion in assets and holds 73% of the EU market. Our success came from being early movers - and we must learn from that agility to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving environment.
Retail investing & productive capital – Policy should support the flow of productive capital into the economy, enabling long-term investment. With governments encouraging investment through tax incentives and EU initiatives such as the Savings and Investment Union, it’s important that Ireland’s approach fosters an environment where capital is put to work in ways that benefit the broader economy.
Auto-enrolment – A significant step forward for long-term financial wellbeing and retirement readiness. The appointment of scheme managers - already having a strong investment presence in Ireland - brings together some of the best global expertise, further strengthening our local investment ecosystem.
Pat highlighted the continued collaboration between industry and government and that it will be essential in ensuring Ireland remains a global leader - while delivering tangible benefits at home.
